Top Rated Bulgarian Minister Evasive about Presidential Bid

Bulgaria's Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Rosen Plevneliev, neither denied or confirmed he could be the nomination of the ruling GERB party to run for president in the fall.

Plevneliev, who for months now has been the Minister from the cabinet of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party, with the highest approval rating, spoke in a Tuesday interview for the TV channel bTV.

When asked directly about the possibility to become President, the Minister reminded he is not a member of GERB and has been invited to join the cabinet as an expert, but nevertheless promised to be the first one to announce the news about his nomination if and when there is one.

"I work hard and try to achieve concrete results. This is why my ratings are so high. Prime Minister Borisov has set a firm date to announce the nomination. I have suspicions some Bulgarian politicians, who have mastered political juggling, are focusing on me as a potential candidate in order to dig some discrediting information on me," Plevneliev stated, adding he had no concrete facts about a discrediting campaign, but any such actions deeply outrage him.

The Minister further reiterated that Borisov had been crystal clear the decision about GERB's presidential nomination is still pending.

Regarding information in the press that the new Maritsa highway, is crumbling away as it is being built, Plevneliev said such information was exaggerated, but admitted there are some flaws.

He reported that the State Road Agency has been notified and expenses for the repair would be taken by the subcontractor.

"The Minsters are not building the roads; they authorize others to do it," Plevneliev pointed out, promising that by August 2 construction is to begin on all highways the cabinet vowed to build.
