Georgi Gergov, a high-ranking Socialist and majority owner of the International Plovdiv Fair, has been nominated for president.

The nomination has been unanimously backed by all Socialist organization in the municipality of Plovdiv, who say Gergov is qualified and dignified enough to run in the presidential race.

"Given that the party members have put their trust in me, I do agree to be nominated for this post," Gergov, who is known to be a close friend of current Socialist President Georgi Parvanov, commented.

He noted that more than 30 members of the Socialist Party have been nominated for the post so far. The runner will be picked at a Congress on July 23.

"If the party decides that I am most fit to run for president, I will run, because I have a vision for Bulgaria's development," he said.

Currently 50.58% of the shares of the International Plovdiv Fair are owned by the "Puldin Tournvest" company whose majority share package belongs to businessman, Georgi Gergov.

Gergov acquired the majority share package of the company, which was not slated for privatization, in 2008 by purchasing them from restitution owners.

Soon after the cabinet of his Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party came into power, Economy and Energy Minister Traicho Traikov declared he would return the ownership of the Plovdiv Fair back to the State. The first idea was to increase the capital, but the move could not be carried out without the agreement of "Puldin Tourinvest.

The state is continuing its court battles against Gergov and scored its first victory in February this year.
