Sweeping Food Safety Inspections in Bulgaria Detect Serious Irregularities

The Supreme Administrative Prosecutor's Office published Thursday the results of sweeping food safety inspections carried out in Bulgaria in the period April 04 - May 06 2011.

In the course of one month, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has checked a total of 10 921 sites for compliance with the requirements of Bulgarian legislation in the sphere of food quality and safety, labeling of food products from animal and non-animal origin, etc.

According to the media statement, the checks focused on grain foods, meat products, eggs and fresh fruit and vegetables

The checks were assigned to the executive director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency by the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor's Office.

Out of nearly 11 000 inspected sites for the production and wholesale and retail trade of food products, 40 sites have been closed, 345 sites have been issued statements of administrative offense, 759 sites have been issued instructions for removing irregularities, and a total of 41 141 kg of food products have been scrapped.
