Commentator: Bulgarians are Superstitious, Self-Destructive
Society | April 25, 2011, Monday // 11:07| viewsSpiritual life in Bulgaria is complex and perplexing, yet seems to be going nowhere good, mused social commentator Haralan Alexandrov on the second day of Easter.
Speaking for the Bulgarian National Television, the social anthropologist commented that a lot of people go to church out of superstition, fossilized tradition or "pagan and pragmatic" motives.
"Believing in the Christian God has nothing to do with superstition and means giving away your pride and self-contentment," said Alexandrov, adding that true Christian religiousness is not rampant in Bulgaria.
"You have people going with equal enthusiasm to the church, to miracle healers, and to clairvoyants," recalled the analyst.
Alexandrov further lamented the overall state of values in Bulgaria, implying that people are opting for an indulging and self-destructive life-style that is hard to root out.
