Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi has addressed the international coalition striking his regime to end the "barbaric offensive" against Libya, referring to the UN-mandated military operation.

Gaddafi sent a letter to what he described as the "contact group" of nations meeting for a special conference in London on Thursday to discuss Libya's future once he is brought down from power.

In his letter, Gaddafi compares the air and missile strikes against his regime, started on March 19 by Western powers to establish an UN-mandated no-fly zone over Libya, to military campaigns launched by Adolf Hitler during World War II, as cited by international media.

Some 35 countries, including seven Arab states are meeting in London on Tuesday just as the Libyan rebels have started to push back against the Gaddafi loyalist forces, closing in on Sirte, Gaddafi's birthplace and an outpost to the capital Tripoli.

In a telephone conversation late on Monday, US President Barack Obama, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed that the London talks should aid "the political transition in Libya," and that Gaddafi's regime has to go as it has lost all political legitimacy.
