The condition of the Sliven Investbank security guard, who was shot during a bank robbery attempt, remains critical.

The information was reported by the Director of the Military Medical Academy in Sofia, Gen. Prof. Stoyan Tonev.

The wounded man, Stancho Stanev, 42, was transported to Sofia late Friday evening after his condition worsened. Tonev gave high marks to the Sliven surgeons and said the wounds are very serious.

Stanev was shot around 4 pm on March 23, after Stefan Petrov Stefanov, 27, from the Nova Zagora village of Korten, bust in the bank and took 6 employees hostages.

Stanev underwent a five-hour-long surgery in the Sliven hospital with a chest surgeon who was sent from Stara Zagora to lead the team.

Stefanov was charged Saturday with attempted robbery, attempted homicide, and taking hostages. He faces life without parole.
