Bulgarian Football Union's head and former Bulgaria 1994 World Cup goalkeeper Borislav Mihaylov was elected Tuesday among the members of UEFA's executive committee.

A total of seven seats were elected to four-year terms at the congress of the European football organization, which also re-elected Michel Platini of France for a second term as UEFA president.

Just last week Bulgaria's Borislav Mihaylov commented that he did not have high hopes and didn't stand much chance of being elected to the 16-member ruling panel by the UEFA's 53 member federations because of the large number of prominent candidates from Eastern Europe.

Mihyalov got 28 votes and was among the first six among those elected or re-elected. He has thus become the Bulgarian with the highest position in international sports organizations.

Russian football leader Sergey Fursenko and Switzerland's Peter Gillieron were among the newcomers.

Grygoriy Surkis, a president of the Ukraine football federeation, retained his seat one year before his country co-hosts the 2012 Euro Championship. Grzegorz Lato from Euro 2012 co-host Poland failed to get elected.
