Bulgaria's Globalized Martenitsas

I have the honor of presenting to you our new column for short comment of 150 words: "Sofia Speaking"!

I will jump to pointing out I am glad we are starting this project on March 1, the day of "Baba Marta" or "Martenitsa", a revered Bulgarian folklore holiday.

Interestingly, this uniquely Bulgarian tradition is now affected by globalization and outsourcing as cheap martenitsas made in China are flooding the market.

There you have it, your basic globalization debate: on the down side, the Chinese martenitsas are far from authentic, sometimes don't make sense, and undercut the earnings of poor Bulgarians; on the plus side, they do bring down the end consumer prices.

Yet, the martenitsas unconditionally prove this liberalization is for the better as it is market economy and "spirit of capitalism" that have upheld and promoted this Bulgarian tradition making it fashionable with the youngsters.

We need your support so Novinite.com can keep delivering news and information about Bulgaria! Thank you!
