Finnish Tourist Killed in Avalanche near Bulgaria's Bansko

An avalanche has killed one Finnish tourist near the Bulgarian ski resort Bansko, the regional directorate of the interior ministry in the city of Blagoevgrad announced.

Around 4 pm on Thursday, the regional police department in the town of Bansko was alarmed about an avalanche that had fallen near the Todorka peak in the Bulgarian Pirin Mountain.

Police and rescue teams arrived at the scene immediately. It was announced that the avalanche had swept four Finnish tourists and one of them had died.

At present, the Bulgarian winter resort Bansko is preparing to host the Ski World Cup 2011. About 15 000 people are expected to arrive in the town.

Four world champions will take part in the championship – Christof Innerhofer from Italy, Ted Ligety from USA, Jean-Baptiste Grange and Thomas Fanara from France.
