Bulgaria’s PM Not Happy about Visa Withdrawal of Ex Minister

Bulgaria’s PM Boyko Borisov said he was not happy about the withdrawal of the US visa for former Interior Minister, Rumen Petkov, because it would affect negatively the country’s image.

“When primary figures are being publicly slapped in this way, it does not speak well for the whole country,” Borisov said Wednesday in an interview for the Bulgarian National Television.

He said was not happy about Petkov’s visa withdrawal and he does not want comment on his statements anymore.

“I read what the US Ambassador is saying. Both Alexei Petrov and Rumen Petkov were figures in the Bulgarian Socialist Party and they have been leading the secret services for four years. This means that they do not even want to say ‘Hello’ to you,” Borisov said.

He confirmed the theory of Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, that Petkov has met with controversial businessmen and alleged mafia bosses, the so-called Galevi Brothers, to arrange the drug traffic scene in the country. Borisov also backed Tsvetanov for saying that all records for the meeting have been destroyed.

“We could talk about his now but it would only be a waste of energy. We would begin yet another scandal and we would distract the [public] attention,” Borisov said.

He pointed out that during his time as the Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, the interior minister and the prosecutors at the time did not have US visas. He added that the visa of Petkov, who was the next interior minister, was revoked.

“I do not want to comment on anything else,” Bosirov said.
