Greece Releases Bulgarian Arsonists on Bail

The two Bulgarians, accused of setting on fire the forest on the Greek Diaporos Island, have returned for Bulgaria after being released on a bail.

The Consulate General of Bulgaria in Thessaloniki, Lachezar Ivanov, announced Wednesday that the arrest have been appealed by the two men's lawyers. After ruling release on bail, the court has also ruled that the Bulgarian arsonists should be extradited, which has again been appealed by the defense,

The magistrates have decided to cancel the measure after the Bulgarian Consulate guaranteed that the two men will leave Greece in 48 hours.

“At the moment, the men are in Bulgaria. The bail has been paid and they will be waiting for the hearing date to be scheduled,” Ivanov said.

In the end of July, the Bulgarians were arrested after they set of fire the forest of the Diaporos Island in Greece. According to unofficial information, the men have been celebrating a personal holiday on a yacht and have shot with festive missiles.

The arsonists were detained in the police station in Polygyros, the capital of the Prefecture of Halkidiki.
