Two Bulgarians have been arrested after setting on fire the forest on the Greek Diaporos Island, Greek media have reported.

The incident happened on Saturday and the fire was extinguished the same night.

The Bulgarians have been detained in the police station in Polygyros, the capital of the Prefecture of Halkidiki. They have been provided with consular assistance.

“We have been informed about the case by the Greek authorities. The two Bulgarians are still under arrest. The Consulate General of Bulgaria in Thessaloniki has participated with its own representative in the first sitting in the court in Polygyros,” said Lachezar Ivanov, consul general of Bulgaria in Thessaloniki.

Ivanov has also added that the Bulgarians have been provided with a translator and a lawyer.

If convicted, the two may face up to 10 years imprisonment under the Greek arson law.

According to an unofficial information, the Bulgarians have been celebrating a personal holiday on a yacht in the bay between the Diaporos Island and the Vourvourou resort and have shot with festive missiles.
