The Bulgarian government has made important rule of law reforms during the last year, as noted in the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism Report of the European Commission, the US Ambassador to Sofia, James Warlick, says in a press release issued Wednesday.

In it, the Ambassador points out the US welcome the strong reform momentum Bulgaria has shown since the Commission’s last annual report in July, 2009, including the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code which are “vital” in the fight against organized crime and corruption.

“The report also notes the importance of further progress on judicial reform, to improve efficiency, accountability and consistency of the judicial process.  The US government strongly supports Bulgaria's initiatives to address these concerns, as well as efforts to strengthen the rule of law and to increase the accountability of the judiciary,” the press release reads.

The Ambassador concludes the US are committed to working with the Bulgarian government in pursuit of these goals so that the Bulgarian people can have a justice system they deserve.
