Foreign Minister Believes 'Europe 2020' Is Bulgaria's Priority

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister has announced that the country's priority in the next six months would be the implementation of “Europe 2020”.

“Europe 2020” is important not only for the EU as a whole, but also for Bulgaria,” Minister Nikolay Mladenov said Monday at a forum, discussing the priorities and challenges in front of the Belgium's Presidency in the EU.

The Bulgarian minister has expressed the country's gratitude towards Spain for its successful leadership in the first six months of 2010 and confirmed Bulgaria's full support for the Belgium's Presidency.

Mladenov expressed his hope that Bulgaria, as well as all other EU member states, will have its representative in the European External Action Service (EEAS). In his words, in this way Bulgaria will not feel isolated from the decisions, made in the EU.

The Foreign Minister pointed out that since EU enlargement is an important topic for Bulgaria, he would like to see progress for all the countries, striving to become EU member states.

“I hope that by 2014 all the Western Balkans countries will have begun negotiations with the EU,” Mladenov said.

He also added that Bulgaria is hoping to join the Schengen agreement in 2012.
