Bulgaria and Syria have agreed to re-open the flight routes from Sofia to Damascus and from Varna to Latakia.

Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov confirmed the agreement while in Damascus Sunday and also stated that “the main purpose of my visit here is to bring Bulgarian companies back to Syria.”

He also added that Syria would like to use Bulgarian professionals and companies for the construction of the metro in Damascus as well as for the construction of energy facilities. He reminded that there are 3000 firms in Bulgaria which include Syrian involvement.

Borisov concluded that it was a surprise that Syria hoped Bulgaria would play an important role in solving the Middle East conflict. He added that “without Syria there can’t be peace in the Middle East… we will take the responsibility to inform our allies in NATO and the EU and our partners in Israel of the Syrian position.”

Earlier Sunday, Borisov revealed that Syria would pay Bulgaria USD 17 M during the next month, which is 24% of the total USD 75 M debt.
