Poland's presidential election will take place on June 20 following the death of incumbent Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash.

Acting Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski kicked off an election campaign that polls show he's likely to win by signing a decree setting the date of the first round of the presidential election for June 20.

Komorowski signed the ruling on the election date at 5:40 a.m. today, his spokesman, Jerzy Smolinski, said by phone, as cited by Bloomberg agency.

Komorowski, who's also the parliamentary speaker, is the official candidate of Prime Minister Donald Tusk's Civic Platform party.

Kaczynski's opposition Law & Justice party doesn't have a candidate yet, though his twin brother Jaroslaw, a former premier, may decide to run.

The second-biggest opposition party, the Left Democratic Alliance, also lost its candidate in the plane crash and hasn't chosen another.
