The Bulgarian Socialist Party has slammed severely Finance Minister Simeon Djankov at a news conference Tuesday.

“Djankov is the ideologist of the far-right policies of the Borisov Cabinet, and of all those crazy reforms. The Finance Minister tells lies all the time,” former Prime Minister and BSP leader Sergey Stanishev declared.

The Socialists gave a news conference after the weekly meeting of their Executive Bureau as a reaction to Dajnkov’s participation in a Nova TV talk show Monday night, in which he said that former Labor Minister, Emiliya Maslarova, currently charged with abuse of power, must go to jail. Djankov also allegedly hinted that President Georgi Parvanov might be a secret billionaire.

“This is person is illiterate and detrimental,” BSP Spokesperson Korneliya Ninova stated with respect to Djankov.

She has accused the Finance Minister of a deliberate attack on the cigarette monopoly Bulgartabac because of his statements in the recent weeks (that he later renounced) that Bulgartabac might be involved in illegal production and smuggling of cigarettes.

“In spite of all lies told by the Finance Minister about how he will increase state revenue, the Customs Agency, for example, has seen a drop of 40% in VAT,” Stanishev has pointed out.

“We live in a state of Interior Ministry,” said the Socialist leader urging the government to go all the way in fighting organized crime.

“Any ideas of terminating or delaying the project for the construction of the Belene Nuclear Power Plant are a national betrayal,” said Yavor Kuyumdzhiev, former Deputy Minister of Economy in the Stanishev government.

In his words, the second Bulgarian nuclear plant, once in operation, will be bringing an annual profit of EUR 300 M.

The Socialists maintain their traditional thesis that the construction of the Belene NPP does not exacerbate Bulgaria’s energy dependence on Russia but actually has the opposite effect.
