New, higher prices of central heating, natural gas and water are coming into force in Bulgaria on January 1.

Following a decision of the Bulgaria State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission from the end of December central heating prices rise by 5% and natural gas prices by 10% from January 2010.

Both of the price hikes are less than expected, with reports earlier in December suggesting a 10% central heating rise and a 18% rise in the price of gas.

Experts say the increase will be reflected in a very minimal way in the consumers’ accounts. For example a household that heats a house of 70 square meters will have to pay BGN 6-7 more monthly.

Natural gas is rising by 10,4% from January 1 and 1000 cubic meters of blue fuel will cost BGN 413,24 euro excluding VAT. Further gas price rises are expected in 2010.

Hikes in water prices have been introduced in fourteen Bulgarians towns.
