The first EU President, Herman Van Rompuy, has stated immediately after his election Thursday night that Europe must play an important role in the world.

Van Rompuy, who was selected by the EU leaders as the first President of the Union under the Lisbon Treaty, spoke in favor of the organization’s continued enlargement, as long as the potential new members meet the required criteria, as quoted by BGNES.

“Europe is a union of values, and has the responsibility to play and important role in the world,” President Van Rompuy declared in his first news conference.

President Van Rompuy said his “profile” as a EU head would have to do with “dialogue, unity, and consensus”.

Belgium’s still acting Prime Minister, who is known as a specialist on brokering consensus, vowed to direct the negotiations with the EU Council in such a way that all 27 member states would come out of them as winners.

The 27 leaders of the EU have described their special summer to elect the first EU President, and the EU High Commissioner on Foreign Policy – in the face of Catherine Ashton from the UK – as a historic meeting because of the unanimity that they achieved.
