A group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament have objected strongly to Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov suggesting that it is a mistake that the BSP has not been prohibited.

Borisov stated on Sunday, in an interview for Nova TV, that “it is a mistake that a Communist Party which killed people has not been banned”, referring to the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in Strasbourg urged Bulgaria to respect differences in opinions and to defend political pluralism on Wednesday.

BSP MEP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ivaylo Kalfin, said; "This behavior conflicts with democracy, freedom of expression, freedom of speech and pluralism.” He added; “Just such a position is contained in the reaction of a group of European Socialists and Democrats, also with a commitment that they will ask the other main political groups in the Euopean Parliament to pay attention to Bulgaria on this issue.”

Kalfin continued; “The scandal was triggered by the outrageous words of the Prime Minister, who thinks he can say whatever he wants and when he wants. It is simply not so," cited by Darik Radio.

Borisov said on Sunday that Bulgaria has lost 20 years of its history because of the descendants of the former Communist Party, i.e. the Bulgarian Socialist Party.

He added; “I can’t stop laughing at those who say that GERB is a totalitarian party. Which was the party that carried out terrorist attacks in churches, and put people in concentration camps? It is a mistake that a Communist Party which killed people has not been banned. Those who killed my grandfather now want a new read of history,” in an interview for Nova TV shortly before the emergency congress of the Bulgarian Socialist Party reelected former Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev as Party Chair Sunday night.
