Bulgaria's Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, accepted the resignations of two top police employees in northwestern Bulgaria over a racketeering scheme carried out by local policemen.

The Director of the Regional Interior Directorate in the city of Vratsa, Ivan Salov, and the Head of the Police Precinct in the town of Byala Slatina, Toni Kostadinov, resigned Wednesday over the Saturday arrest of eight Byala Slatina policemen, accused of racketeering Bulgarian and foreign nationals. They were all members of the traffic police and operational workers in the Vratsa police department.

Tsvetanov stated that it was "unacceptable for so many employees of one regional directorate to be involved in a scheme using the methods of an organized crime group.

Rossen Ivanov, who until now has been the Head of a Vratsa Police Precinct, was appointed as temporary Director of the Vratsa Regional Police.
