Eighteen people have drowned so far this summer just on the southern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.

The staggering number was announced Wednesday by the Bulgarian Red Cross in the city of Burgas. All fatalities have happened on beaches without lifeguards.

There have been 20 incidents just this past week with people, who ignored the swimming ban, but luckily all have been rescued.

The search for a 56-year-old Sofia man, who disappeared Monday in the waters of the Southern Sinemorets beach, is continuing. In the mean time, rescue teams on the northern Black Sea coast, near the city of Varna, are searching for a Polish man, who was taken away by the sea after attempting to swim on an unguarded beach.

The Red Cross extends serious warnings that there is a deadly rip current all along the coastline. People trapped by it are advised to not try to fight it, but rather flow along with the current.
