Bulgaria Former PM Stanishev: We'll Report Political Purges to EU

Bulgaria's former Prime Minister and Socialist leader, Sergey Stanishev, said Tuesday his party was to defend any former official who had been unjustly charged with violations after the new government of GERB took over.

"We are worried that there will soon be accusations by the present Prime Minister against members of the previous government. In a democratic state there is a division of power. There has never been a political cover for anyone", Stanishev said after Tuesday's meeting of the Executive Bureau of the Bulgarian Socialist Party.

To support his words, he pointed out that he had fired some of his ministers during his term.

"The BSP is not going to remain quiet if there is a political purge in the administration. If there is a purge, we are also going to inform our foreign partners. Political changes in the cabinet are something normal but purges in the administration are not", the former PM said regarding the firing of a number of Deputy District Governors by the new Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov.

Stanishev criticized his successor for firing the head of the National Agency "Road Infrastructure", and for making the agency part of the Regional Development Ministry; according to Stanishev, this was going to slow down the execution of the important EU funded projects.

"The new government gave up its campaign promises very quickly. They claimed they would sign an IMF bailout agreement, or that they would reduce the amount of social security payments by 5%. BSP's experts are going to stand for the results of our term in power, and we are going to refute every single lie of the new ruling party. I still haven't seen any specific plans from the new ministers. A clear working plan is lacking. It should be clear that in June 2009 the state budget had a surplus of BGN 170 M", the former Prime Minister said.
