Bulgaria Commissioner Kuneva with Highest Preferential Vote in EP Elections

Two Bulgarian MEP candidates - EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva and former Foreign Minister Nadezhda Mihaylova - have received a preferential vote of over 15%.

Kuneva has received the preferential vote of 28,5% of the voters who supported her party, NMSP, in the European Parliament Elections on Sunday, whereas Mihaylova has gotten the preferential vote of 16,5% of those who supported her Blue Coalition.

According to the Election of MEPs Act, if any nominee on the party ticket received a preferential vote of over 15%, they get bumped up to the spot of the party ballot. In Kuneva and Mihaylova's cases, however, the preferential vote played no role since both were the No. 1 nominees on the ballots on their respective parties.

The Central Electoral Commission has announced that most of the preferential vote went exactly to the No. 1 candidates of the respective parties and coalitions. The top GERB candidate Rumiana Jeleva got a preferential vote of 10,4%, the top DPS candidate Filiz Hyusmenova - 4,1%, Dimitar Stoyanov from "Ataka" - 9,79%, the outgoing Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin from Coalition for Bulgaria/BSP - 10,57%.
