Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, and his deputy, Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin, are involved in murky projects causing environmental destruction.

This has been stated by the Co-Chair of the Bulgarian Greens party, Andrey Kovachev, in an interview for Novinite.com.

Kovachev, who is under number one on the Greens' ballot for the 2009 European Elections, has also mentioned names of the Bulgarian media tycoon, Krasimir Gergov, and the energy millionaire and informal leader of the LIDER party, Hristo Kovachki as people involved in illegal swap deals with attractive state-owned lands located in protected territories.

According to Kovachev, Prime Minister Stanishev is involved in one of the schemes through his brother, architect Georgi Stanishev.

The Greens Party Co-Chair Kovachev has also said the Greens party, which was set up in the spring of 2008, has been created by NGO activists with two major goals - saving Bulgaria's nature, and coping with lawlessness and corruption.

Kovachev and the Greens believe one of the main ways to achieve this goal is through empowering the citizens to participate directly in the government of the country.
