The former chief of Bulgaria's Revenue Agency, Maria Murgina, faced Friday charges of criminal breach of trust, false property declaration, and putting her employees under duress.

Murgina was accompanied Friday by her three lawyers to the State Investigation Service, where she was interrogated, and the charges were raised.

The case was launched in February after the State Agency for National Security (DANS) stripped Murgina of her right to access classified information and amidst mounting accusations of huge organized draining of Value Added Tax (VAT) and political cover-up.

The opposition alleged that the criminal activities at the NRA had the protection of high ranking politicians and that Murgina has been warned about the investigation against her by an undisclosed prosecutor, closely linked to ruling Socialist Party top leaders.
